25th Anniversary of Return of The Saint
On Friday, December 21, 1979, at 11:40pm central time, the Return of the Saint made it's US debut on the CBS Late Movie. It was the 2nd part of the "late movie," the first part being The Avengers. As CBS allowed 70mins for each show, both were broadcast uncut (that would never happen today.)Labels: 2004

Crossplot on The Movie Channel
The Movie Channel has been showing Crossplot, the film Roger Moore made just after he played The Saint. The movie made with many Saint show regulars, including being written by Leigh Vance with additional scenes by John Kruse, and was produced by Saint producer Robert S. Baker.
The film is rarely shown, and is not available on VHS or DVD. Here is a brief summary of the plot: Roger Moore is an account executive for a advertising agency in the swinging setting of London 1960's mod living. An important account is up for renewal, and Roger finds himself committed to a new ad campaign with a mystery model whose photo somehow gets switched in with the models he was suggesting. He tracks her down, and begins the photo shoot, but things keep getting stranger and more mysterious. Attempts are made to murder the model, and Roger is framed when someone else ends up dead. He flees with the girl, the police and thugs in tow. The plot gets more complicated when it turns out that the girl had actually overheard a sinister plot, but that she didn't realize what it was about -- Roger has to jar her memory and then put all the pieces together in order to prove his innocence and thwart the gang during the Queen's birthday in Hyde Park.Labels: 2004, DVD, Roger Moore

Ian Ogilvy, star of Return of The Saint, will publish his first children's book on June 3rd in the UK, and in August in the USA.
Measle and the Wrathmonk is a fantastic adventure story of magic, trains and Manolo Blahniks. Ian Ogilvy, with his first children's novel has created a rich world where nothing is quite what it seems. You'll never look at glazed doughnuts and lemonade in the same way again.
The original idea for Measle and The Wrathmonk came from an incident many years ago, when Ian visited a film director's house in London: "Apart from making very good films, this director was also a serious model train hobbyist. He had built an extraordinary train set in one of his spare rooms. The tracks were laid on shelves that ran around the walls of the room and the scenery was built up almost to the ceiling. The train set bore very close inspection - if you looked really carefully, you might spot along the tracks the tiny figure of an old fashioned, black-skirted, bonneted nursemaid, pushing a Victorian perambulator towards a sharp bend in the path. On the other side of the bend - and out of her view - sat a Bengal tiger (There's a Bengal tiger - or at least a model of one - in Measle and The Wrathmonk). The whole layout was like this and the trains themselves took a secondary place in the scheme of things. There was a boundless imagination - and a distinctly quirky humour - about the set up and it set me thinking about the idea of a live boy being placed somehow in a miniature world of somebody else's imagination."
The second title in the proposed three-volume series, "Measle and the Dragodon," has just been completed and is due out in the fall. Ian is currently hard at work writing the third book, "Measle and the Mallockee."
Robert Zemeckis' ImageMovers and Warner Brothers has purchased the rights to the entire three-volume series, and plan to use the same "performance capture" animation that they used in the forthcoming movie, "The Polar Express"
You can order all three of these books today from Amazon UK: Measle and the Wrathmonk Measle and the Dragodon Measle and the MallockeeLabels: 2004, Amazon.com, Ian Ogilvy

A&E has released the first season of black and white Roger Moore episodes on DVD. In 1962, Roger Moore arrived in a big way with the instant classic The Saint, which he played Simon Templar, an ex-con Robin Hood-type thief who steals from the rich... and keeps it for himself. Usually mistaken for a James Bond-like secret agent, Templar was more compassionate than Moore's unflappable alter ego and was less likely to use a gun or gadget to get out of a sticky situation. More often than not, Templar relied upon wits and his trusty white Volvo to escape a dilemma, and for six seasons he weaved effortlessly through caper after caper while heavily influencing later series The Avengers, The Man From U.N.C.L.E and Mission Impossible, not to mention loaning a riff or two to 007 himself. Includes all 12 first-season episodes. 3 DVDs. 1962/b&w/10 hrs/NR. Buy The Early Episodes Set 1 from A&ELabels: 2004, DVD, James Bond, Roger Moore, Volvo

Extensively researched, Spy Television explains the contexts in which spy shows were created, explores the influence of spy TV on our culture, and points to unexpected connections between actual espionage and our feelings about undercover operatives, past and present.

Lovers of science-fiction and detective shows will find surprising connections between their favorite shows and the secret worlds of secret agents. Endorsements from the Experts "Britton has conducted an exhaustive analysis of a unique time in our cultural history--the spy craze of the 1960s and its subsequent ripple effects over the years. He's left no stone unturned in digging up not only the classic entries in this genre, but also the obscure, the forgotten, and the one-season wonders. I thought I knew every entry in this genre, but his book reminded me of many I'd forgotten, and informed me on many I had missed completely. This book is the definitive history of the spy phenomenon that was a cultural outgrowth of the Cold War." -- Jon Heitland, author of The Man from U.N.C.L.E. Book: The Behind the Scenes Story of a Television Classic
"Wesley Britton has his finger squarely on the pulse of the TV spy. A wonderfully comprehensive examination of the numerous spies who have passed through our living rooms over the decades, Britton's SPY TELEVISION covers the espionage gamut from AVENGERS to WILD WILD WEST. A must-have for anyone interested in the history of this all-important TV genre." -- Danny Biederman, Writer/director of the James Bond featurette "A Spy For All Seasons," Author, "The Best of Bond...James Bond" (EMI Publishing), Author, "The James Bond Collection" (Warner Bros. We have reports that A&E will be issuing the black and white Roger Moore episodes on DVD this spring. The complete Megaset of the color episodes has been released already, and many fans have been waiting for the rest of the series. The A&E set will be different from the Australian sets. An A&E spokesperson writes, "Our version will differ from the Aussie version. The DVD will have the usual minimal features (photo gallery, text Bio) definitely not all the bells and whistles listed on the link from the Australian DVD. The set we are releasing is a 3-disc set containing the 12 B&W season 1 episodes, as compared to the 6 disc set in Australia."
The early black and white shows were based on the original Leslie Charteris stories, so they are consider by many to be even better than the color shows -- and we'll soon see for ourselves!Labels: 2004, DVD, Leslie Charteris, Roger Moore
