The Saint on TV
Episode 5: The Loaded Tourist
"THE LOADED TOURIST"
The Saint witnesses a murder and finds himself in the midst of a mystery
involving a faithless wife and smuggled jewels.
Simon Templar, the Saint (ROGER MOORE), spots the family at Rome Airport as
Customs officials examine their luggage and find nothing, despite the
Saint's feeling that there is a look about them that suggests guilt. The
family consists of Fillipo Ravenna (EDWARD EVANS) his wife Helen (BARBARA
BATES) and Ravenna's son, Alfredo (JOSEPH CUBY) by his first marriage.
On the 'plane, the Saint finds Alfredo sitting next to him. The boy is
obviously upset and confides that the family is emigrating to America,
visiting Geneva first. He hates the idea of leaving Rome, and blames his
Americal step-mother, Helen, for the move. The Saint does his best to cheer
They have not been in Geneva for long when the Saint, relaxing on the
promenade, hears a commotion, sees Fillipo Ravenna collapse as a knife sinks
into his back, and a man run off with the briefcase Ravenna has been
carrying. The Saint gives chase, catches the man and tackles him. The man
drops the suitcase and escapes.
The Saint is now closely involved in the affairs of the Ravenna Family.
Fillipo was carrying something so valuable that he was killed for it. Helen
Ravenna denies knowing what it was, but is clearly anxoius about the
briefcase. The Saint finds it, with Alfredo's help. It contains a
spectacular amount of jewellery, smuggled through the customs; inside the
case is a note addressed to a Paul Galen, in Geneva, saying that the bearer,
Fillipo Ravemma, can be trusted. It is signed by Carlo Visconti who, Alfredo
says, is an old friend of his father's.
The Saint pays a visit to Paul Galen (MICHAEL RITTERMAN), taking with him a
necklace from the Ravenna collection, and the Saint says he will return the
following day with this and the other jewellery, fixing an appointment for 8
Returning to his hotel, the Saint finds his room has been ransacked. The
intruder is Garcia (DAVID CARGILL), the man who killed Ravenna. Disturbed,
he takes a leap out of a window and crashes to his death.
Carlo Visconti (NORMAN FLORENCE) arrives in Geneva, and Alfredo overhears
him talking to Helen. In doing so, he learns that Visconti had hired Garcia
to rob Ravenna, and that Helen is planning to run away with Visconti. He
also hears Visconti outline a plan to get rid of the intrusive Simon
With this information at his disposal, passed on to him by Alfredo, the
Saint is able to turn the tables very neatly on Visconti and the faithless
Helen - at the same time, making it possible for Alfredo to return to his
