The Saint on TV

Episode 10: The Golden Journey

"THE GOLDEN JOURNEY"

The Saint undergoes considerable discomfort to bring a beautiful but spoilt
girl to her senses - and takes her on a hundred-mile trip.

Belinda Deane (ERICA ROGERS) is beautiful, warm-hearted and generous. These
qualities, however, have been well hidden by years of over indulgence on the
part of her doting parents. All her life, she has had her own way and far
too much money for her own good.

The Saint, Simon Templar (ROGER MOORE), takes an interest in her for two
reasons. One is that she is soon to marry one of his oldest friends; the
other is that he feels someone ought to teach her a lesson. He is that
someone, and he prepares the way by breaking into her hotel room and taking
her money, her jewels and her passport.

Even the self-possessed Belinda is at a loss, alone in a Spanish hotel and
penniless, and due to meet her fiance one hundred miles away in Tormes in
ten days time. She hasn't even a passport to prove who she is.

Her appeal to the Saint for financial help is turned down flat, and her
plight becomes worse when the Saint drops a hint to the hotel manager that
she is a crook, which means that she will get no credit. Belinda's own
actions, when she loses her temper in the street when trying to steal a
motor-cylce, lead her to prison. The Saint bails her out an persuades her
that her only hope is to accompany him on a hundred-mile hike to Tormes - a
hundred miles of dirt tracks, pine forests and heather.

It turns out to be a memorable walk. The relationship between the two is at
bursting point from the start. They fight and they argue. They sleep in the
open, and the Saint insists on her sharing the chores of washing up after
their meagre meals.

Every attempt on her part to get a lift fails. Her clothes become torn and
ragged. Her shoes wear out. Snakes and insects terrify her. Her hair becomes
a mess. But, for the first time in her life, she learns that there are joys
in living rough and being close to nature. And, gradually, both begin to
feel respect for one another, a respect which survives even further crises
as they continue their hike.

It's a very different girl who goes to meet her fiance.....
