The Saint on TV

Episode 14: The Invisible Millionaire

"THE INVISIBLE MILLIONAIRE"

A millionaire and his assistant are in a car crash, and the assistant is
reported killed. But strange things that happen after this bring the Saint
into the drama.

Marvin Chase (BASIL DINGHAM) has everything. A beautiful wife, Rosemary
(KATHERINE BLAKE). An adoring teen-age daughter, Ellen (JANE ASHER). And
wealth.

Like so many ruthlessly ambitious men, however, he has little time for
anything but business. This is one of the reasons Rosemary has turned to his
assistant, Bertrand Tamblin (MARK EDEN). Tamblin's love for her, she says,
is the only thing that keeps her sane. But Tamblin is identified as the
victim of the car crash in which Marvin Chase is so terribly burned that
even his family cannot tell how scarred he is because of the bandages that
swathe his face.

Chase's secretary, Nora (EUNICE GAYSON), is worried, however. She cannot
understand the instructions Chase sends out to her. His financial policy
seems to have switched completely, and his medical adviser, Dr Quintus
(MICHAEL GOODLIFFE), refuses to let her discuss the matter with her boss.

In desperation, Nora telephones her old friend Simon Templar, the Saint
(ROGER MOORE), and asks for his help. She tells him she thinks she is being
made an accomplice in some sort of gigantic fraud. The Saint arranges to
meet her, but when he reaches the rendezvous in a boathouse, she is dead.
Almost at the same time, Marvin Chase's brother, Jim (NIGEL STOCK), arrives
on the scene.

The police are baffled. So is the Saint. He doesn't believe Jim Chase could
have been responsible, though deeply involved in financial benefits he would
receive from his brother's new policy.

A chance remark from Marvin's daughter, Ellen, gives the Saint something to
work on. She comments that it was a Godsend that the car crashed almost
opposite Dr Quintus' house. She also remarks on the fact that the car clock
stopped at nine minutes past eleven, which doesn't tally with evidence
provided by a village postman.

The time element give the Saint the opportunity gradually to piece together
the drama of a fiendishly clever murder plot which could have succeeded but
for the suspicions of an alert secretary whose actions led to her own death.
