The Saint on TV
Episode 20: Judith
When a beautiful girl backs her car into the Saint's roadster, he finds
himself bumped into unexpected adventure and a cunning attempt at fraud.
A quiet drive on the outskirts of Montreal has a dramatic outcome for Simon
Templar, the Saint (ROGER MOORE). A girl backs her car out of a clearing,
hits him, and then makes off without stopping. Immediately afterwards, the
Saint is accused of trespassing on the estate of the wealthy Canadian
industrialist, Burt Northwade (DAVID BAUER).
Northwade is an aggressive, ruthless tycoon, just on the point of bringing
off a big deal by the sale of production rights in a turbine engine, despite
the pleas of his wife Ellen (MARGO JOHNS). She accuses him of having stolen
the turbine plans from his brother, though legally, he is within his rights:
his brother. Dr. Northwade, has given him possession of the plans as
security against a loan. The time limit for the repayment of the money is
now almost up.
Northwade both despises and envies his less successful brother - the envy
stemming from the fact that he has a daughter, Judith, and his own marriage
When the Saint traces the girl whose car bumped him, she tells him she is
Judith Northwade (JULIE CHRISTIE) and admits to having been the real
trespasser on her uncle's estate - "Casing the joint" with the intention of
robbing Uncle Burt of the plans which rightly belong to her father.
Despite the fact that the accusations that he was the trespasser have led
him into trouble with the police, the Saint sympathises with her and is even
more impressed when he meets Dr. Northwade (JOHN McLAREN), who forbids his
daughter to go ahead with her plan.
The Saint decides to investigate, and discovers a few more unpleasant things
about Burt Northwade. His efforts to see the industrialist lead to further
difficulties with the police, but unexpected help comes from Ellen
Northwade, who comes along to see him and begs him to steal the plans, with
her co-operation. She wants to save her husband from the step he is taking.
Her assistance makes this the easiest burglary the Saint has ever attempted.
But the drama, so far as the Saint is concerned, is by no means over. Judith
