The Saint on TV
Episode 35: Luella
The Saint meets up with an old friend who insists on painting the town red
while his wife is away and becomes the victim of a blackmail plot.
Like many other husbands, Bill Harvey (DAVID HEDISON), wants to break loose
the moment his wife's back is turned. Bill, an American banker who has just
received promotion, is on a business trip to London, where he meets his old
friend Simon Templar, the Saint (ROGER MOORE). His wife, Doris Harvey
(SUZANNE LLOYD), receives an urgent call to see her sister in Paris and the
exuberant Bill is all set to enjoy the fruits of temporary "bachelorhood".
Despite Simon's restraining efforts, he insists on painting the town red,
wins a lot of money at a casino, and gets himself involved with a gorgeous
girl named Luella (SUSAN LLOYD), who tells him she has an apartment to rent.
Bill, who has promised Doris that he will find accommodation for them in
London goes to see the apartment, and then discovers to his horror that he
has been tricked into a compromising situation with the glamorous Luella.
Her so-called husband, Matt Joyson (AIDAN TURNER), photographs them and
threatens to cite Bill as co-respondent in a divorce action unless he cares
to buy the photograph for £2,000. Bill pays up.
Doris, returning earlier than expected, accidentally learns what has
happened and walks out on him.
Bill turns, despairingly, to the Saint for help, and Templar soon realises
that the camera which recorded the damning evidence would have had two
negatives in it. Bill might not have heard the last of this yet......
The Saint does some checking up. One thing he learns is that the porter at
the hotel where Bill is staying is obviously in the racket, tipping off Matt
Joyson when there is a sucker around. The porter (JOHN WOODNUT) comes clean
when challenged and, threatened by the Saint, agrees to tell the Joysons
that he has run across another rich American.
This time it is the Saint, in the guise of "Samuel P. Taggart", who allows
himself to be tricked into visiting Luella's apartment. This time, however,
Luella is up against a man who knows just what his is doing.
Bill gets his £2,000 back. But not for long. There is still Doris to be
