The Saint on TV

Episode 37: The Good Medicine

"THE GOOD MEDICINE"

The Saint steps into the perfumery business and finds that the sweet scent
has a nasty smell behind it.

When Simon Templar, the Saint (ROGER MOORE), meets the elegant and lovely
Denise Dumont (BARBARA MURRAY), she is at the height of her success as the
woman behind the wildly popular Dumont beauty preparations. Simon visiting
Paris, is introduced to her by his old friend Dave (BILL NAGY). Simon soon
discovers why Dave has engineered the meeting. The Saint, Dave feels, is
just about the only man who could teach the glamorous Denise the lesson she
deserves.

The sophisticated Denise Dumont of today is very different from the unspoilt
farm girl of ten years ago who took a job in a pharmacy in the provincial
town of Beauvais and, shrewdly and calculatingly, set her hat at her
employer, Phillip Dumont (ANTHONY NEWLANDS). She realised that he was a
brilliant chemist but a stick-in-the-mud. After marrying him, she soon
directed his ability towards the making of cosmetics and founded the firm
that was to become one of the greatest of its kind in Paris. Soon, however,
she outgrew her husband, sent him back to Beauvais, divorced him and waxed
rich on his creations.

Phillipe is now an ailing man and penniless. He needs money so that he can
take a long rest. He's too proud to ask Denise for help. It is unlikely, in
any case, that the ruthless career woman would offer any assistance.

So the Saint steps in. A subtle piece of strategy on his part places
Phillip's younger sister Marie (JEAN MARSH), whom Denise has never met, into
Denise's luxurious home as a personal maid. At the same time, Simon pursues
a romantic association with Denise, who is led to believe that he has
business interests which are very much in her own line.

When he lets it be known that he has received a big offer from London for
one of his lines, she is all the more curious. After she has fallen for this
bait, Simon takes her on a picnic and lets her into his "secret" by giving
her a specially-made pill which, he claims, will prevent mosquito bites. It
appears to work. She can't resist the temptation to make him a huge offer
for the formula.

It is only after the Saint has handed the money over the Phillipe that
Denise discovers that she has swallowed some very bitter-sweet medicine
indeed!
