The Saint on TV

Episode 58: The Sign of the Claw

"THE SIGN OF THE CLAW"

The latest "The Saint" adventure takes Roger Moore into the jungle - and all
the hair-raising excitement of jungle warfare. There is, of course, a
beautiful girl. That's why the Saint is there!

The girl is Suzan Farmer who, after success as a child actress, took time
out to study at a drama academy and then returned to television as an
attractive adult in an early episode of "The Saint" series.

Burt Kwouk, the Chinese actor who appeared throughout the "Sentimental
Agent" series as the urbane "gentleman's gentleman," plays a major (and much
more menacing) role in "The Sign of the Claw," and other leading parts are
taken by Peter Copley, Geoffrey Frederick, Godfrey Quigley and Leo Leyden.

The jungles of South-East Asia, as Simon Templar, the Saint (ROGER MOORE)
remarks are amongst the hottest spots in the world just now.. There's a war
going on - except that nobody calls it a war. Officially, it's an
anti-terrorist campaign.

It is certainly far different from the more sophisticated haunts in which
the Saint can usually be found, but the reason for his presence is as
attractive as anything to be found in more civilized areas - to wit, one
slender, shapely girl named Jean Morland (SUZAN FARMER). They are
long-standing friends. There is another reason for his presence as well - an
official assignment in which he has a personal reason for trying to find a
terrorist who has stirred up a lot of trouble and, in doing so, has caused
the death of one of Simon's old friends.

Jeans's father, Don Morland (PETER COPLEY), has only recently inherited the
farm from his brother, and he is already facing - and refusing - demands
from a neighbouring farmer, Max Valmon, to sell out. Valmon soon makes it
clear that he is going to force him to do so by one means or another.

Simon has been at the Morland's bungalow only a short time when it is
attacked by terrorists led by Tawau (BERT KWOUK). Morland is injured; a
servant is killed. The attack is called off when the Saint succeeds in
getting a message through to Army Headquarters, but when the Army arrives
there is no sign of any of the terrorists.

Simon soon realises that something strange is happening at Valmon's farm.
And one dramatic event after another culminates in Don Morland being
kidnapped and Valmon's admission that he and Dr. Julius (LEO LEYDEN) are the
men behind the campaign to overthrow the present regime. Jean, too, is
kidnapped to be held as a hostage, and Simon literally falls into a trap
when he walks into a large net.

He comes face to face with the man for whom he has been searching. The
situation is desperate, but he has one card up his sleeve ........
